Why work with us?

  • All our digital/litho print products use paper and card certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC), an international NGO dedicated to conserving the world’s forest resources and protecting the rights of workers, communities, and indigenous peoples connected to the forests.

Our foil stamping uses a dry, ink and solvent-free process that uses the minimum amount of energy, with only the heatplate requiring power...and the stamping being done by a human.
Foiled paper and card can also be recycled and repulped. Sadly, this is not possible for items with a laminated finish.
Unlike methods like screen printing that rely heavily on water for rinsing screens and cleaning, dye-sublimation is a waterless process. This not only saves water but, because the dye bonds directly with the item, there’s no risk of runoff.
Items such as our sublimated shopping bags are made using recycled fabrics that not only reduce waste but also repurpose materials like plastic bottles, keeping them out of landfills and oceans.

  • We work with a number of designers and businesses, providing foil and print under their name to their customers.
If your order is for one of your clients (or a gift for a loved one), we can deliver direct (minus the paperwork or mention of Top Foil) to them under plain packaging so it looks like it was sent by you. Just let us know when you place your order.

  • We value all our customers. Regardless of whether you're ordering a single personalised coaster for a friend or 5000 flyers for your event, you'll receive the same friendly service.
If you're unsure about anything or have questions, just ask...we don't bite.

I have ordered a few items for myself and for other people as gifts and all have been amazing! I will always go here for special gifts as he will go above and beyond to get it perfect! Each gift I have ordered has brought a tear to my eye, they are just perfect!!!

Found this company via a google search and I am so lucky I did! I needed hot foil wedding invitations and Gav was just incredible with his knowledge and the help he provided me in getting the invitations ready in a printable form.
I have just received the invitations and they are even better than I could have imagined. The turnaround time was extremely quick also. Would highly recommend Gav and his team. I will definitely be back for the rest of our wedding stationery in the near future.

Such a pleasure to work with Top Foil in printing our wedding invitations! I had attempted to print them myself and once I realised that was not going to work/it was far too stressful, I was incredibly lucky to have come across Top Foil.
From the very beginning Gav was so knowledgeable and responsive, and his friendly nature reassured me that the vision can still be brought to life. Gav went above and beyond in making sure I was aware of and understood all the options for my tricky cotton rag paper. The invites came out perfectly, we love them, and I can’t wait for everyone to receive them. I would highly recommend Top Foil - thank you.

A summary of some of the items we offer

Artwork Specifications

How to set up your artwork for the best results

  • Our foiling service employs a traditional (and manual) process involving metal dies and specialised foils instead of ink. In order to foil stamp your items, we first need to create a foiling die from your artwork which will be mounted on the foiling press to stamp your design.
In order to provide an accurate quote for foil jobs, we will need to see the artwork in order to confirm it's suitable for die-manufacture, it's size and the level of detail involved, as this dictates whether a brass, magnesium or copper die is required.

Hot foil stamping is a completely separate process to our colour printing, so if your order requires both colour print and foiling, you will need to submit the colour and foil artwork separately, along with a mockup image featuring both colour and foil parts for our reference when setting up the job.

    Vector-based artwork
When creating artwork for foil, it's important to remember that it must be fully vectorised with the outlines of text and images included – no shading, no gradients or anti-aliasing.
Using pixel-based bitmap/raster artwork would result in a die with jagged edges, which will cause problems in foiling and make your final product look terrible. Vector art, on the other hand, doesn't have pixels as it's all mathematical lines and curves that can be expanded or reduced without affecting the resolution.
In practicality, this means that your artwork needs to be created using Illustrator, InDesign or other software that creates and outputs vector based PDF files.

    CMYK | 100% Black
We can’t foil a gradient or do shading. Regardless of the foil colour chosen, all foiling die artwork needs to be created in black on a white background in a CMYK color space where black is 100% black and all other values are 0% (C0% M0% Y0% K100%).

    1:1 Scale
The foiling die will be manufactured to the size of the artwork you supply. Please ensure your artwork is exactly the same size you want the foil to be stamped. This is especially important if the foil needs to align with standard print.

    Multiple Colours
We can only foil one colour at a time. For designs that feature multiple foil colours, please be aware that each colour will need stamping separately and require it's own artwork and foiling die.

    Print Size
Whilst the substrate can be up to A4 (210x297mm) in size (letterheads), the actual foil print size is limited to the die size our press can accommodate.
Currently the maximum die/foil print size is approx A6/6x4".

    Font Size
When foil stamping text, bigger is always better, particularly so on textured boards which require more pressure and result in a deeper impression (deboss). This creates more opportunity for foil to bridge gaps in small letters and 'fill in'.
We do not recommend a font size smaller than 10pt due to the high risk that the foil will fill in, making the text difficult to read.

    Artwork Tips
Try to break up large areas of foil. Solid areas such as a path of 2x3″ are very hard to foil. Those of you who’ve ever tried to put a screen cover on a smartphone or fondleslab will know that trying to get something cleanly on such a large area without having dust or air pockets is near impossible.

Avoid having large areas of foil mixed with fine detail. Large areas require a different release foil and more pressure than fine detail. Mixing the two on the same die means using a medium release foil and trying to adjust it for both the detail and the large blocks of foil. This can add hours of labour, a lot of waste and even making the job impossible to run.

    Confused?
We understand that these requirements can be a bit of a learning curve compared to regular printng, and if this is the case, please contact us and send what you have and we'll see what we can do.
  • These specifications cover bulk print products including business cards, flyers, banners and posters.
These are our general requirements although specific details can be found on the individual product pages.

Downloadable templates for these products featuring safe areas and bleeds are available here.

    CMYK Colour
Artwork must be created in CMYK mode (not RGB). Please ensure any RGB or Pantone elements are converted to CMYK before saving your print ready file. If you don't, we will do a standard conversion for you, however, our results may vary from what you expect and this is at your own risk.

    Artwork Resolution
For the majority of products, artwork must be created at minimum resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch).

    Accepted File Types
Our preferred file type is a print-ready PDF. If you have the knowledge and software to save in this format then please do so. Alternatively, as long as the artwork meets our required design specifications we can also accept JPEG files.

    3mm Bleed
A bleed is an additional area of background colour or image that extends the artwork beyond the size of the finished item and enables edge-to-edge print.
If we only printed up to the trim line (without any bleed), a slight movement during the trimming process could result in white lines along the edges.
The industry standard bleed is 3mm for most printed paper and card products.
What this means is that each edge of the artwork should be oversized by 3mm. Adding 3mm to the top and 3mm to the bottom will increase the total height by 6mm, and the left and right bleeds will add 6mm to the width.
For example, the finished size of an A4 Letterhead is 210mm x 297mm. A 3mm bleed needs to be added to each edge of the artwork, which makes the artwork size 216mm x 303mm.
Your background image / colour should extend to fill the bleed area although remember this will be trimmed off.
If you're unsure, feel free to get in touch.

    3mm Safe Area
In the same way in which bleed is used as a trimming buffer on one side of the trim line, we use a safe area on the inside of the trim line. This is usually 3mm on each edge and should not include any important elements or text as there is a risk they could be cropped during trimming.
Be sure to check the individual product page for bleed and safe area requirements as some items may differ from the standard 3mm.

    Crop / Trim Marks
Unless stated otherwise on the individual product page, please supply your print artwork without trim marks.

    Fonts
If supplying artwork as a pdf file, please ensure fonts have been converted to outlines or embedded.

    PDF Proof
When ordering, you have the option to Just Print or receive a pdf proof via email before your order joins the production queue.
If choosing the proof option, you are required to check this and respond via email, either to approve the proof or to reject it and provide replacement artwork before your order is processed.
All Just Print artwork supplied is treated as print ready. We will of course always do our best to point out any errors such as problems with spelling or bleed, however it is your responsibility to check for errors and ensure the above specifications are met.
  • We use a dye-sublimation process to produce many of the non-paper based items found in our Shop section. This includes mugs, coasters, photo gifts and metal prints.
These are our general requirements although specific details can be found on the individual product pages.

    RGB Colour
Unlike digital and litho print, our dye-sublimated products require artwork in RGB colour mode (sRGB IEC61966-2.1)

    Artwork Resolution
For the best results, please supply your artwork at minimum resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch).

    Accepted File Types
Our preferred file type is a print-ready PDF. If you have the knowledge and software to save in this format then please do so. Alternatively, as long as the artwork meets our required design specifications we can also accept JPEG files.

    Bleed
A bleed is an additional area of background colour or image that extends the artwork beyond the size of the finished item and enables edge-to-edge print.
If we printed the exact size of the item (without any bleed), a slight movement during the pressing process could result in white lines along the edges.
What this means is that each edge of the artwork should be oversized by the bleed size.
For example, if the finished size of a coaster is 90 x 90mm and requires a 3mm bleed, adding 3mm to the top and 3mm to the bottom will increase the total height by 6mm, and the left and right bleeds will add 6mm to the width, making the artwork size 96 x 96mm.
Your background image / colour should extend to fill the whole bleed area.
If you're unsure, feel free to get in touch.

    Safe Area
In the same way in which bleed is used as a outer buffer on one side of the trim line, we use a safe area on the inside of the trim line.
Please keep all important text elements at least 5mm in from the edges of the artwork (not including the bleed area).
Be sure to check the individual product page for bleed and safe area requirements as these differ between items, with some requiring no bleed at all.

    Crop / Trim Marks
Unless your print background is white, (or stated otherwise on the individual product page), trim marks are not required.

    Fonts
If supplying artwork as a pdf file, please ensure fonts have been converted to outlines or embedded.

    Visual Proof
Some of our dye-sublimated products have the option to receive a visual proof or mock-up via email before your order joins the production queue.
If choosing the proof option, you are required to check this and respond via email, either to approve the proof or to reject it and provide replacement artwork before your order is processed.
All artwork supplied is treated as print ready. We will of course always do our best to point out any errors such as problems with spelling or bleed, however it is your responsibility to check for errors and ensure the above specifications are met.
  • We currently offer several options when it comes to printing on fabric-based items:

    Dye-Sublimation (WHITE/LIGHT POLYESTER ONLY)
Full colour print which fuses with the polyester fibres for a smooth finish, rather than sitting on top.
Available on white/light polyester-based items although worth noting that we can't print white, meaning any white in your artwork will be the colour of the fabric itself.
    Maximum Design Size
    280 x 400mm
Follow the artwork specifications in the Dye Sublimation section above.

Clothing Film / HTV (COTTON | POLYESTER)
CAD-Cut from single colour film and heat-pressed onto the item. A good option for designs with 1-2 colours.
As the design is cut out rather than printed, we dont need to deal with bleeds and safe areas.
    Artwork Resolution
    300dpi minimum
    Accepted File Types
    .pdf | .svg | .png | .jpeg
    Maximum Design Size
    290 x 420mm

Full Colour Transfer Print (COTTON | POLYESTER*)
We currently have two variations when it comes to full colour transfer prints:
DTF Transfer Print: A good option for small quantities.
Hybrid Transfer Print: Digitally printed with a screenprinted base layer.

*DTF Transfer print is not suitable for patterned or sublimated polyester. Hybrid blocker transfer print available.
    Colour Transfer Print Specifications
Applicable to both DTF and Hybrid Transfers.
    Use CMYK colour mode
Artwork supplied in RGB mode will be converted, which may result in different colors than desired.
    Avoid thin free-floating lines
Setting small elements to at least 0.2mm thick ensures every last detail gets printed, and nothing disappears.
    Full opacity
All semi-transparent effects, such as glows, fades and shadows, must be encased by something solid, with hard edges.
    Transparent background
A transparent background on your art file ensures that everything that’s supposed to be clear remains unprinted and is not unexpectedly filled with white (or another background color).
    Convert text to shapes.
Editable text objects in your file not come out correctly. Convert all text to shapes or outlines to guarantee your typography comes out exactly the way you want it.
    No Custom Spot Colors
Our printer may interpret these incorrectly, resulting in an undesired color.
    Expand Pattern Fills
As part of the artwork preparation process, our team often needs to move arkwork around. If a pattern fill is used in a design, it may come out offset if it isn’t expanded first, so make sure you expand any pattern fills before supplying your file.
    Save as a vector-based PDF
    No crop marks required.
    Maximum Print Size
    300 x 420mm
